United States antitrust authorities said they had conditionally approved plans by the hospital products company Hospira to buy a generic cancer drug company in Australia, Mayne Pharma. The Federal Trade Commission said it would not oppose the $2 billion deal after the companies agreed to divest themselves of Mayne assets used to manufacture and supply five generic injectable drugs. The assets must be sold to Barr Pharmaceuticals within 10 days of the acquisition as part of the agreement, the F.T.C. said. Hospira, based in Lake Forest, Ill., has said the purchase will more than double the size of its international business.
