The Supreme Court (SC) today signalled a cooling off period of more than two months in the turf war between the Securities and exchange Board of India (Sebi) and the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (Irda) over regulating unit-linked insurance plans (Ulips). It is worrying that the ministers of the Union Cabinet feel free to say and do what they like and the PM is a helpless spectator (Loose cannons, May 12). Shashi Tharoor had no business to talk about Saudi Arabia as a mediator between India and Pakistan; Jairam Ramesh had no business to speak on government policy on Chinese investment in India; Navin Jindal had no business to speak for khap panchayats that are challenging the law of the land and the Constitution of India.

Indian companies have been flaunting with pride their various accreditation and accomplishments, including the coveted Deming Award. Various industry associations and institutions have been aggressively promoting quality, productivity and cost competitiveness. Well-known consultancies have brought out international comparators on the subject. The net outcome is that most established manufacturing companies have largely closed the gap that existed between the Indian companies and the foreign firms on production efficiencies.

Sun, 23 May 2010 19:02:00 GMT | Business Standard
There are many places on earth where one could imagine being in the centre of the world. Bahrain is certainly one of them. A small dot of an island in the Persian/Arab Gulf, it lies at the geo-political crossroads between the developed North and the developing South, the declining West and the rising East. There are important exceptions to this binary divide. Russia in the North is not much of an industrial power, while India in the South is becoming one.

The financial crisis of 2008-09 and the sovereign crises of 2010 have allowed the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to reclaim the mantle of the institution as one before which Insolvents Must Fawn. Dominique Strauss-Kahn (DSK), the IMFs managing director (MD), will deservedly get credit for using the crisis to snatch pre-eminence from the jaws of looming irrelevance, an irrelevance once threatened by the global scarcity of insolvents.
