Madhukar Sabnavis: Passion of a creator

Thu, 03 Jun 2010 19:09:36 GMT | Business Standard

This could be apocryphal but it surely is instructive. Half way through his first attempt at painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo suddenly disappeared for weeks. It left his team of painters befuddled, the church and the diocese in a state of panic as the deadline for opening the Chapel was approaching and the work not done. He returned weeks later, only to tear down all the work done till that date and start all over again. He however worked in a frenzy to complete what is now the famous Creation of the World piece. The Cardinal watched it all indulgently. This is the passion and madness of the creative mind. And its also about the value of a patron who appreciates it and is willing to support it.

When it comes to investing in stock exchanges, Thomas Caldwell has been ahead of his time. Caldwell started looking for exchanges to invest over a decade ago. In August 2003, he bought the first seat on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and decided to take it public. He made roughly $100 million for his clients acquiring NYSE seats. Caldwell was also the largest shareholder and the governor of the Toronto Stock Exchange, where he made a killing as price of seats skyrocketed from $50,000 to $31 million. Caldwells clients have holdings in Hong Kong, Johannesburg, London, Osaka and Toronto stock exchanges as well as the Chicago Board Options Exchange and the International Stock Exchange. Globally, exchanges have announced nearly $100 billion worth of joint ventures and acquisitions since 2005 and Caldwell has been at the helm.

A mixed blessing

Thu, 10 Jun 2010 19:05:18 GMT | Business Standard

A global surveys rating of Indian consumers as the greenest in the world, though significant in itself, should be viewed in perspective. In the annual survey carried out by the National Geographic Society and the international polling firm GlobeScan, India topped the ranking for the eco-friendly consumption pattern of its population for the second year in a row. Brazil has been adjudged second, China third and the US last in the survey that appraised 17 nations. The criteria chosen for measuring the environmental impact of consumption pattern included modes of transportation, household energy and resource use, food consumption and the use of consumer goods, besides peoples attitude towards environmental issues. It is not surprising that barring housing, where India scored behind Brazil, it topped in all other areas. Much of the credit for this high green rating goes to the poverty and frugality of Indian consumers.

Mon, 21 Jun 2010 00:00:00 -0400 | NPR News Headlines

Harrisburg, Pa., is deep in debt. And the city's incinerator is mostly to blame. Almost $300 million is owed on the Harrisburg Resource Recovery Facility, and the Harrisburg Authority, which owns the city's utilities, has been missing many of the debt payments.
