The Congress party had scheduled a special press conference on Friday, to be addressed by Home Minister P Chidambaram and Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. According to party sources, the press conference was called to announce the entry of Bahujan Samaj Partys (BSPs) Tamil Nadu unit chief Selvaperunthagai into the Congress. Since the BSP leader has some criminal cases against him, and he is unknown in Delhi, some in the Congress felt it would be out of place to induct him into the party at the Congress headquarters. Has anyone noticed the war of words that has been going on in Tamil Nadu between the Congress and the DMK? Elections are due in the state next summer. So, when Congress speakers kept harking back to Kamaraj rule (the era of K Kamaraj) at a party meeting, DMK bridled a bit. Later, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi addressed a meeting where he spoke of the legacy of the Dravidian rule. He told cadres they alone had the power to change the situation. The government led by DMK is in a minority (it is supported by the Congress from the outside). But, in the next election, it must become a majority government, he said. Then, Congressman and former minister E V K S Elangovan highlighted the Congress-led Union governments role in the states development. Karunanidhi said Elangovan was out of line. But, so far, the Congress hasnt reacted. Will the alliance remain? Probably. Will DMK win again? Not if the Congress has its way.

Officials and ministers at the meeting of the Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers on goods and services tax (GST) were taken by surprise when K Rosaiah, chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, criticised the draft constitutional amendment Bill on GST. Rosaiah was the first to speak on the proposed Bill and his criticism was surprising since the government was counting on Congress-led states for support. Listening to Rosaiahs remarks, a non-Congress state finance minister whispered into the ears of a senior finance ministry official, He is speaking against your Congress. The official replied, Im not from Congress, sir.
