ECONOMIC BAROMETERS Two critical economic events are scheduled to take place this week. First, on Wednesday, the Federal Open Market Committee is expected to meet and issue its decision on short-term interest rates; expectations are that the federal funds rate will remain at 5.25 percent. Investors have been hoping that rates would be lowered, but positive economic reports last week about new home sales and big factory orders have made that less likely. On Friday, the government is expected to report on unemployment for December, with forecasters predicting an increase of 140,000 jobs.
