The BG Group of Britain, an oil and gas producer, said it had agreed to buy a power plant in the northeastern United States from a group of private investors for $685 million. The power plant, an 805-megawatt gas- and oil-fired unit in Dayville, Conn., is BG?s second power plant purchase in New England. The company bought the Dighton power plant in Massachusetts in October. BG expects to complete the purchase of the plant in the first quarter of 2007.

Shares of Suez, the French water and power group, rose after the billionaire businessman Fran?ois Pinault?s holding group, Artemis, said it was keeping its options open for a possible bid for the company. Artemis?s statement came after weeks of speculation about an imminent bid for Suez, which is struggling to complete a proposed merger of its own with Gaz de France, the French government-owned gas company. Artemis said no decision had been made regarding a possible bid for Suez shares ?and that all options remain open.? Suez said that it was not satisfied with Artemis?s statement and that it planned to ask the French financial market authority, AMF, for another, stronger clarification about the group?s intentions.
