World Business Briefing: The Netherlands: Map Maker Bought

Tue, 24 Jul 2007 03:08:16 GMT | New York Times

TomTom, Europe?s largest maker of car navigation systems, said it would buy a digital mapping company, Tele Atlas, for about $2.8 billion to form a bulwark against larger competitors and help it map the best possible routes as users need them. TomTom said it would pay 21.25 euros ($29.33) a share for Tele Atlas, a 28 percent premium to the company?s closing price on Friday. The deal would combine Europe?s two smaller, high-growth rivals against the dominant players in the navigation device and mapping markets. TomTom, based in Amsterdam, relies on the data that Tele Atlas gathers to present the maps for its displays. Tele Atlas, based in Den Bosch, the Netherlands, has been increasing sales quickly but was unprofitable until recently, and relies on TomTom for about a third of its revenue.
